It is a phrase that has become the modern equivalent of a dismissal - a way to invalidate months of groundwork, late-night architecture sessions, and the invisible effort that goes into a finished product. When you hear those words, the person saying them isn't seeing the months of labor you poured into the foundation. They are only looking at the speed of the result.
But here is the hard truth we often struggle to swallow. why should they care?
We build these elaborate narratives around our work. We pave "hard roads" with sweat and meticulous attention to detail, expecting the world to marvel at the beauty of our struggle. But in this modern era, no one is obligated to see the beauty of the story you built. To the observer, it is just another output in a sea of data.
The Relativity of Understanding
To understand this disconnect, we can look at one of the most beautiful stories ever told in science - the Theory of Relativity.
Imagine a story where a traveler moves at nearly the speed of light. They leave Earth, journey through the stars, and return ten years later. When they land, they find that while they have barely aged, their twin on Earth has grown old. It is a haunting, poetic narrative about the fabric of time and space.
However, somewhere else in the world, a physicist might look at that exact same concept and see no "story" at all. They see the technical elegance of the math. They see the Lorentz factor

To the physicist, the equations are the truth. The technical approach is sufficient. Is their lack of interest in the "poetic twin story" a flaw? No. Both paths lead to the same fundamental truth. No one can dictate that you must follow a specific, beautiful storyline to reach a valid conclusion.

This tension between the "story" and the "solution" recently manifested during a competition I participated in with my team. We were at the top of the leaderboard, outperforming the field. Yet, during discussions with the organizing committee, we were met with a wall of resistance.
The organizers felt we had "bypassed" critical story checkpoints using AI. They had built a specific narrative path - a series of hurdles and realizations they expected every team to experience. Because we used modern technology to find a more direct route, they felt we hadn't "seen" the story they tried to illustrate.
But here is the reality. if they built a complex story and we didn't see it, that isn't our problem.
Our goal was to complete the task as efficiently as possible and find fulfillment in the achievement itself. Whether we took the exact steps they envisioned is irrelevant to the utility of the solution. The fact that they built a "super story" does not create a moral obligation for us to walk every inch of their winding path when a highway now exists.
The Modern Paradigm
We are living in an era defined by the compression of effort through technology. Addressing a problem with AI isn't "cheating" the story. it is a modern way of addressing challenges.
If a tool allows us to leapfrog over traditional checkpoints, it doesn't mean the work is effortless - it means the effort has shifted. We are no longer focused on the manual labor of the "road," but on the strategic direction of the journey.
If the beauty of your story depends on everyone else being forced to struggle through it the same way you did, then perhaps the story isn't as strong as you think. Efficiency is the new aesthetic. We should be allowed to enjoy the task, get the results, and embrace the tools that get us there faster.
In the end, the world doesn't care about the "hard road" you paved. It cares that the road leads somewhere. How we choose to travel it - whether through the poetry of the narrative or the cold efficiency of the equation - is entirely up to us.
